Mansa Devi is a Hindu Godesses,also Known as Godesses of snakes worshipped in Northern India is referred to be the daughter of Lord Shiva who emerged from the mind of Lord Shiva and that's why she is called Mansa(born from mind) and in many scriptures it is said that she was created by Lord Shiva to pacify the the nagas when they were creating havoc on Earth. She is referred to be the sister of Vasuki Naga.
The Story of Chand Saudagar
There was a famous story of Chand Saudagar,a wealthy merchant and a big devotee of Lord Shiva who refused to accept her as godesses. Mansa Devi got angry and in retaliation she killed his six sons through snake bite.When the time of death of his seventh son came,he built a iron room to protect him. Despite all these protections his seventh son also died out of snake bite. But then his seventh son's wife Behula took the dead body of her husband and went and prayed to Mansa Devi for his revival. Impressed by her devotion Mansa Devi revived him and Chand Saudagar agreed to worship her and accept her as a god.
Worship and Significance
Mansa Devi is also referred as the godesses who is worshipped for protection from snake bites,fertility and prosperity. She is also referred to as the godesses who fulfills the wishes of the devotees.
The Temple of Godesses Mansa is situated on the top of Bilwa Parvat at Haridwar,Uttarkhand. It is also known as Siddh Peeth,where your wishes are granted and people also tie thread on the trees. You can reach there by ropeway or by climbing 750 steps.
